Canvas Care and Information.
Natural canvas / Sisal rope/sustainable hardwood...
The best materials make the best products and this is no different for canvas. Some suppliers will weigh their canvas after treatment to make the canvas weight stated heavier than the original untreated canvas. It is not always the heaviest canvas that is best but this is factor worth consideration. At Canvas and Cast we use 350gsm. 12oz canvas and then treat this in accordance with the required function of the structure.
Canvas and Cast want your canvas tent , spinnaker tarp or bespoke designed canvas space to last, as well as look beautiful. Our philosophy is to combine durability with form and function. Carefully designed around quality materials we pride ourselves on every detail. Using metal door zips, sisal rope ties, larger poles, larger guy lines and pegs, greater canvas weight, breathable groundsheets are factors which place our products in a different league when compared like for like. We want our products to be passed from one generation to the next. Throw away the throw away attitude and choose a product that has been engineered to be thoroughly used and yet stay the course.
Unique Wooden Poles.
Natural British hardwood poles, Cut from coppiced ash / chestnut / hazel or saved from the hungry jaws of a tree surgeons woodchipper, Canvas and Cast are able to offer every bell tent customer the opportunity to own a unique wooden pole.
Our canvas bell tent is a classic example of our design philosophy. The traditional canvas bell tent has many waterproofing issues as a consequence of its poor front door design. Many of the army style bell tents do not have the carefully designed extending porch front which sets the door further out. This results in rain entering the tent at the top of the opening whereas in a canvas and cast bell tent you stay dry. The groundsheet and tent ‘union’ has also been carefully thought through. Many bell tents simply rely on the weight of the groundsheet edge to retain the base flap extending from the canvas wall of the tent. During adverse weather this union between groundsheet and canvas is easily disturbed. With a Canvas and cast canvas tent the canvas base of the tent and groundsheet are pegged together using stainless steel d-rings, canvas tabs and elastic rope loops . This system ensures the union remains intact whilst also allowing the sides of the tent to still be easily rolled up if needed.
If you want a canvas tent that stands out from the crowd in both form and function and you want to inflict some ‘tent envy’?…
Canvas
The word canvas is derived from the 13th century Anglo-French canevaz and the Old-French canevas. Both may be derivatives of the Vulgar Latin cannapaceus for "made of hemp,"[1] originating from the Greek Κάνναβις, Cannabis.
Cotton canvas is one of the most versatile products available and has been used in the manufacture of tents not long after its discovery. Canvas has many advantages over the modern trend of using nylon in tent production. Firstly canvas has much better properties in diffusing heat on a sunny day whilst retaining heat on a cold night when compared with a similar sized nylon tent. Secondly canvas is much more robust and durable than many flimsy nylon structures and is consequently able to withstand much greater adverse conditions and general usage.
Cotton canvas is available in many forms from its 100% unbleached natural state, to many excellent cotton polyester combinations which can provide even greater longevity and enhanced waterproof capabilities. Whilst the gold standard canvas we use for our flagship products is 350g canvas, Canvas and Cast use a variety of canvas specifications depending on the design requirements for the canvas product in question or from a particular client brief. This canvas can then be dyed using the pantone TXT pallet range again to any specified requirement.
When purchasing a canvas bell tent today, there are many different options in material to choose from. Some material types are more durable than others, while some are lighter and easier to transport. Generally, the need is what determines the choice of material. If your main concern is weight, then you might want to consider a lightweight 280g canvas. Ensure that this is the weight of canvas prior to any treatments. If durability is your concern, then you should think about a heavier 320g+ weight of canvas.
Canvas weight: Indicates the weight or thickness of the canvas used. Heavier canvas isn?t necessarily better. The weave style and canvas treatment determine the quality of canvas.
Canvas tents and products are normally constructed from canvas that is either in the form 'Army duck' or 'dual fill' weave quality.
Army duck: This canvas type is made by weaving the threads together, both lengthwise and crosswise. Two threads are twisted together to make one single thread, which is then woven into the canvas going both lengthwise and crosswise. This is the best quality of canvas available, it is stronger and more durable and allows the canvas to breath better.
Single fill: Single threads are woven together both crosswise and lengthwise to make the canvas.
Dual fill: Canvas material where two threads are twisted together and then woven into the canvas in a crosswise direction. The threads going lengthwise are single threads only.
Canvas treatments are often applied to natural canvas in the construction of bell tents, yurts etc. There are several levels of treatment which produce particular grades of canvas. Each grade of canvas being applicable to whatever the canvas application.
Boat shrunk:
One of the terms used to state that the canvas has been treated for water and mildew resistance. Boat shrunk tents will not shrink more than 3%.
Marine grade:
One of the terms used to state that the canvas has been treated for water and mildew resistance. Marine grade tents will not shrink more than 3%.
Parafan finish:
An exceptionally heavy finish that treats canvas for water, mildew and fire resistance. The heavy parafan finish should make the canvas more water, mildew and fire resistant. However, significant weight is added to the tent when applied.
Polaris:
This fabric is a 50% cotton/50% polyester blend. It is UV resistant, breathable, mildew resistant, water repellent and flame retardant. This makes an excellent material in the manufacture of bell tents or yurts, or indeed any canvas structure that includes the use of a wood stove inside .The Polaris is flexible in extreme temperatures and is recommended for tents and tipis that will be set up for extended periods of time.
Single fill: Single threads are woven together both crosswise and lengthwise to make the canvas.
Untreated canvas: Canvas that has not been treated for water, mildew, or fire. This type of canvas is cheaper but it does not last as long and is not as durable. This material will shrink considerably when getting it wet.
Water repellent: Treated canvas becomes water repellent after the first soaking.
bell tent, then you can either choose between a natural canvas, or a treated canvas. Natural canvas is waterproof, but is not treated for rot or mildew. Treated canvas is waterproof and is also mildew proof.
Natural canvas is generally heavier, offered in both 12 oz. and 14.9 oz. weights, but is also very durable if taken care of.
Treated canvas is generally lighter weight that natural canvas, usually offered in 10.10 oz. weight.
Tents made of synthetic fabrics such as relite or nylon/mix don't breathe as well as canvas and may condensate. Having a wood stove helps prevent the condensation.
Overall, the most popular choice of material in bell tents is 12 oz. 350g treated canvas. This material is durable, not too heavy, it breathes well, and is waterproof and mildew proof.
Repairing canvas tents
: A hole is not as difficult as you think. There is a glue/seam sealer called Val-A Tear mender. With it and some comparable canvas patch material you can repair almost any size hole. Although, a patch can be applied when the tent is standing, for better control work when the canvas is on a hard surface. On the inside or outside of the tent, or both, cut a patch and outline it on the hole. Squirt some glue on the outlined area of the tent and then on the patch, using a foam brush spread the glue evenly, briefly air dry and then apply the patch. If you have a fabric roller (a small hard rubber roller to apply even pressure) use it on the new patch and you’re good to go.
Care and maintenance
Canvas and Cast canvas tents and products are made to a high standard and, properly cared for, will provide you with many years of excellent use. In order to ensure continued enjoyment of your Canvas and Cast canvas tent or canvas product, we recommend you undertake the following steps. A canvas tent that is well maintained should provide
many years of canvas camping fun!
When pitching your canvas tent or canvas product, take care the material does not snag on protruding pegs, overhanging branches or other sharp objects. Indeed it useful to carefully assess the location before you begin. Canvas and Cast canvas is thick but abrasion and puncture will shorten the longevity of the canvas and smaller problems may overtime develop into irreconcilable ones.
The exterior canvas should be checked periodically for any debris or bird droppings
When the canvas is pitched and these should be removed immediately with a brush and or some water. Do not use detergent on the canvas as this will have a detrimental impact on the waterproofing of the canvas.
When on uneven ground pitch your canvas tent with the door facing down hill. If there is a stiff breeze prevailing from a particular direction, it is best to avoid pitching your tent at an angle whereby the breeze will blow into the tent through the door..
Never drag your Canvas and Cast canvas tent along the ground or floor as this will also have an adverse effect on the canvas through abrasion and soiling.
Any stubborn marks that appear on the canvas are best removed by soaking the area of canvas in question overnight in warm water and then rub lightly with a soft brush or old toothbrush.
Mold and mildew on canvas awnings can be both unsightly and potentially unhealthy. Depending on the amount of the mold and mildew it can also have a negative impact on curb appeal of your canvas tent or awning. Dirt and rust stains from the awnings frame can also make the awnings look old and damaged. Most awnings today are made from a woven acrylic fabric although some are still made from cotton, which can be highly absorbent depending on the type and age of the repellent the fabric was treated with. Cotton canvas can hold stains easily but with the right cleaning tips and a little work they can be cleaned to look new.
Some plants can be damaged by the soap or other chemicals you may have to use in cleaning the awnings so it is usually best to wet them thoroughly and cover them with the plastic tarp while cleaning above them. Brush off any loose dirt and hose the fabric with water. Mix one of the solutions mentioned above such as the Ivory soap with water (1/4 cup soap to 1 gallon water) and sponge into the stained area and let soak for several minutes. Scrub the canvas with your soft bristle brush while keeping your canvas wet with the soap solution. Then rinse thoroughly.
You can help prevent future growth of mold and mildew by spraying on a mixture of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. A garden pump sprayer is good for this. The vinegar will not harm or stain the canvas.
Canvas Storage
When not in use, all canvas tents and products should be thoroughly dry and free from debris before being packed away. Canvas and Cast canvas tents and products come in their own canvas bags for storage. Canvas tents and products should be carefully packed in the canvas bag with which it was supplied and stored at least six inches off the ground. It is vital to ensure that the canvas is dry and showing no signs of mildew, checking particularly the seams and edges. If there is dirt on the canvas, remove it with a stiff brush. If the tent is damp or mildewed, hang it outside in bright sunlight, clear of the ground. Never fold or roll your Canvas and Cast Canvas Tent while it is wet, even if it is only damp from dew, as this will cause the tent to mildew. We recommend that the best policy is to dry your canvas indoors in a well-ventilated place, hung high enough to permit the canvas to be suspended off the floor to promote a good flow of air over and around the canvas..when it is fully dry the tent can be packed and then stored.
Pack any pegs and poles your Canvas and Cast canvas product has separately from the canvas itself., If you have wooden pegs ensure that these are also free from debris and are totally dry before packing.
Canvas and Cast Canvas Tents and products are manufactured using the highest quality 350g canvas and are water repellent, however, varying moisture levels will cause the canvas and guylines to contract. This shrinkage can be sufficient to tear the canvas. Avoid damaging the tent by loosening lines before they become water soaked, so that when they shrink, there is enough slack to prevent your Canvas and Cast Canvas Tent from tearing.
In windy conditions, tighten all the lines of your Canvas and Cast Canvas Tent immediately, check that all the pegs are secure in the ground and fasten the door entrances closed. It is important that every canvas tent owner is aware of the changing nature of the canvas.
